A project to highlight some of Aberdeen’s most celebrated streets has recently been completed – Images provided by Abermedia.
The project was made possible due to funding secured by Aberdeen Inspired, from the Scottish Government Town Centre Fund in 2019, specifically for the design and installation of new signs to encourage pedestrian movement within the city centre.
Visible today in 12 locations across the city, the LED illuminated signs enhance the experience of parts of the city centre and improve wayfinding, both being objectives of the City Centre Masterplan.
Aberdeen based, Scotia Animations started the first installations on Belmont Street and Langstane Place in October 2021, with the final sign installations completed over the summer. Now complete, the signs identify key streets and strategic connection points helping to make Aberdeen a leading pedestrian friendly city.
Sta-Lok first became involved in the project in 2021 with Chelmsford-based wayfinding and signage design specialists Momentum Wayshowing, who designed the signs and scheme for Aberdeen. Sta-Lok helped in the product identification and selection to make suspending the street signs possible.
Multiple Essex based manufacturing companies were involved with the project, including Colchester based specialist sign manufacturer, NES Solutions. Sta-Lok produced a total of 80 Supajust Fork & Swage Turnbuckles for the project, all of these products manufactured in our factory in Mistley, Essex.
Each of the 1×19 Stainless Steel Wire cables were cut and swaged to length in advance to make the on-site installation as easy as possible.
The project appears to have had an immediate impact in Aberdeen with local businesses acknowledging the benefits of the street sign illuminations in enhancing the area’s identity and safety, particularly as a night-time destination.

“… Just to formally thank you for the hardware to keep the signs hanging in the air safely, but also for all of your help and support with the project. It was quite a challenging project at times, and your advice and input were invaluable.
The signs and fixings look great, and local feedback is extremely positive. All the suspension wires, fixings, and turnbuckles are top-notch and will last the City of Aberdeen a long time.”.
