The molybdenum is added to protect the stainless against the elements such as salt water and increases corrosion resistance which is why this type of steel is commonly used in offshore and marine applications. Due to these elements, stainless steel has a thin, transparent layer on its surface. This unique chemical composition creates a surface that repairs itself quickly when it is damaged, preventing a building up of rust and corrosion.

How Can Stainless Steel be Affected in a Harsh Environment?
