    Marine Grade Stainless Steel Explained

Whilst we may find stainless steel in our kitchens or at the doctor’s office, marine grade stainless steel has a few special properties allowing it to be used in fabrication, rigging, cable manufacturing etc. While the most common type of marine grade 316 stainless steel, other 300 series steel alloys can be used. In this article, we will focus on marine-grade stainless steel and its distinctive properties.

Is Marine Grade Stainless Steel Naturally Corrosion Resistant?

Whilst all types of stainless steel have some corrosion resistance, 316 marine-grade stainless steel fares best against salt water. Marine-grade stainless steel has a greater resistance to rust, which makes it suitable to be used in boats which are submerged in water for extended periods of time.

What Gives Stainless Steel its Resistant Properties?

Marine grade steel, or the 316 stainless steel alloys, contains high levels of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. The molybdenum is added to protect the stainless against the elements such as salt water and increases corrosion resistance which is why this type of steel is commonly used in offshore and marine applications. Due to these elements, stainless steel has a thin, transparent layer on its surface. This unique chemical composition creates a surface that repairs itself quickly when it is damaged, preventing a building up of rust and corrosion.

How Can Stainless Steel be Affected in a Harsh Environment?

Saltwater is a tough environment for any metal to survive in. While rust is a common indication of corrosion, the damage can be more than just cosmetic. The sodium chloride in salt water, mixed with oxygen, can eat away at the metal. Using 316 marine-grade stainless steel can prevent this from happening due to its high resistance to corrosion.
